Rutuja Deshmukh, MS

Rutuja Deshmukh – Graduate Student

Rutuja C. Deshmukh, MS is a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program (IBGP) at the University of Pittsburgh. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from D.Y. Patil School, Navi Mumbai, and earned her Master’s from the University of Pittsburgh. Rutuja’s research interests are centered on women’s health, with a focus on hormone-driven diseases of reproductive tissues, including cancers. Prior to joining IBGP at Pitt, she worked at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she investigated how MED12 mutations and estrogen/progesterone signaling drive uterine leiomyoma formation. She is currently studying intratumoral estrogen biosynthesis in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer with a particular focus on enzymes such as HSD17B7 and their role in tumor growth. Outside of the lab, she enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles, reading and painting.
