Neil Carleton, M.D., Ph.D.

Post-doctoral Fellow
Neil holds a BS in Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Neil recently graduated from the MSTP (MD/PhD) at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his graduate work in the lab of Adrian Lee and Steffi Oesterreich, where he studied the intersection of breast cancer and aging. Estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer is the most common subtype of breast cancer. The peak incidence of diagnosis occurs around age 70, even though these post-menopausal patients have low circulating levels of estradiol. Neil’s doctoral work focused on both understanding the aged systemic and tumor microenvironment of breast cancer in the lab and designing and implementing strategies to “right-size” care for this same cohort of patients in the clinic. Outside of the lab, Neil enjoys spending time with his wife, newborn son, and two dogs, and likes running, cycling, and watching the Penguins.
